Scents & $centsability (Wal-Mart Style)!

Hi Everyone!

It is a cool, fall Saturday in my neck of the woods - 56 degrees! Brrrr! (yesterday the thermometer never reached 50.)  The average high for this time of the year is in the low seventies, so it is feeling a little brisk today.  Much more October-like than mid-September!

I'm a-ok with that - I'm a huge fan of weather like this.  Bring out the sweaters, the pumpkins, the fall scents! Bring. It. On.

Today I am going to share some thoughts on a few of my favorite scents of the season - at a bargain price.  I know I have said before that I absolutely adore Yankee Candles - oh I DO!!! But, they can get a bit pricey at times and one thing I adore more than Yankee Candles is infusing my house with the wonderful scents of the season.

In the past , I have shied away from WalMart candles.  They were cheap, had a waxy smell, and were very, very sooty.  No thanks.  I will stick with my higher priced Yankees, thank you very much.

But wait!! In the last year or so, those cheapy WalMart wax products have gone through a huge transformation and have gone from a sow's ear to a silk purse! Pinky swear.

Have you tried them lately? Their Better Homes & Gardens candles, under $4.00 for a medium jar, are amazing!  I don't know if the Wal-Mart Mainstays candles have changed, but today I am only commenting on the wonderful BH& G.  (Let me know if you've tried the Mainstays lately and what you think!)

I whipped up a little kitchen vignette of some of the fall scents I am crushing on this fall season.  (My dog to the right - well, he HATES my camera with a passion and was in the throes of a barking fit the entire time I shot these pics! Grrrr!)

I am constantly using my wax melters (I have a bunch throughout the house).  This is one I have in the kitchen.  At $2.00 for a package of eight wax melts and $3.75 for a double pack, you just can't beat the price.  I usually use two of the cubes at a time - .50 worth, and that will last me two - three days of 12 hours use (36 hours total)!  As opposed to my old favorite of wayyyyy over a $1.00 (on sale) for a similar amount and burn time - that's a big savings, wouldn't you say?

Some of my fall favorites  I am using right now.  Yum!

Even more cool weather deliciousness!

The Better Homes & Gardens candles do not disappoint either. Long lasting, clean burning, and a true scent (not at all waxy), they are a great value.

The Fresh Apple Butter is one of my favorites.  The one shown burning is Simmering Apple Cider - awesome!

The cute carved kitty was a long ago purchase from a Country Folk Art Show that used to travel the country.  They even had a magazine at one time.  I know I am dating myself, but they had some really great shows "back in the day."

How about you? Do you turn to scents to warm up and spice up your home this time of year?  I do still adore my Yankee, and I still give up plenty of $$$ for their wonderful candles, but it sure is nice to find something at a bargain price that I use all of the time.

Have a great weekend!!!

Thanks for stopping by,
Jane

  1. Jane- Thank you so much for the reminder! Last year I bought those BH&G Fall candles and I hesitated in doing it because I thought they would not be very good quality because of the price. Wrongo----they are GREAT candles and they give off a nice strong (but not overpowering scent). I need to pick a couple of new ones up....good value compared to Yankee!

Have a great night- some more kids just drove in- lol xo Diana

  3. I bet your house smells wonderful. I love busting out all of my fall candles this time of year too. I went to Pier One yesterday and bought a few room sprays. They last forever and a little goes a long way.

  9. I have been experimenting with different candles too. I almost always buy Walmart candles. They are smelling better, but the trick for me is when you light them do they waft through the house or just smell good right by the candle? I have a new one I am going to try this week it was called Pumpkin Waffle and it was at Walmart by the air fresheners. It smelled amazing and it was very strong so I think it will waft through the house. I have never tried the wax melters, they sound like a great idea.

    1. The WalMart candles, to me anyway, seem to fill the house!!! As for the wax melters, they are so nice because there is never any smoke and no chance of fire. But I do real candles and melters.

  10. Lovely vignette and a very informative post about candles. I do use a lot of the wax melts and regular candles (Bath & Body Works has some very nice ones -- not cheap though) throughout my home. I happily discovered the Walmart Wax Melts after spending an arm and leg with Scentsy. The Scentsy melts do last longer, but they are 3X as much! I haven't tried Walmart's jar candles in awhile because of the waxy smell and the soot, but I'm thinking I will be trying them again very soon!

    1. I do like Scentsy also, Carol. I do buy a few of the melts - at our annual State Fair in August there is a dealer who sells the bars for $5.00 which is a pretty good price. the candles I have bought from WalMart in the last year have had very little, if any soot.

  11. I winter in Florida and the "Bealls Outlet Store" usually has "Yankee" candles there for $8.00 or so for the large one. I always stock up and bring them home to Canada for myself and my daughters. You don't have a great choice of scents but they are
all pretty nice so that doesn't matter. Just a FYI that some of you might not be aware of.
